In the first quarter of 2023, job openings in Canada fell and wages rose more slowly

That mirrors the results of the latter Labor force survey which showed that employment in trade, transportation and equipment operators and related occupations increased by 100,600 or 3.4 percent in the first quarter of this year, and business, finance and administrative occupations by 47,000 or 1.5 percent.

The reason for the decline is that more workers are bringing in jobs.

“Payroll employment increased by 89,200 in the first quarter of 2023, up 0.5 percent, the eighth consecutive quarterly increase,” Statistics Canada reports.

“In the first quarter, job openings fell in five of the 10 broad occupational groups, led by commerce, transportation, and equipment and related occupations, by 10,900 to 142,800, business, finance, and administrative occupations, by 8,900 to 90,200, and occupations in manufacturing and utilities. , down from 5,800 to 36,400.”

The number of up for grabs jobs fell the most in Ontario, where job openings fell by 25,100. In British Columbia, job openings fell by 7,200 and in Alberta by 4,300 during the first quarter of the year.

However, Manitoba saw an increase of 2,200 job openings.

“On a regional level, job vacancies fell in 10 of 69 economic regions in the first quarter, led by Toronto, Ontario, Lower Mainland-Southwest, British Columbia and Ottawa, Ontario,” Statistics Canada reports.

“Since the second quarter of 2022, when the total number of job openings in Canada reached an all-time high, job openings have declined in 33 economic regions.”
