Indiana cop charged after forcing daughter, 6, to stand in freezing cold with threatening sign

An Indiana police officer, Cody Scott, and his wife, Kylie Scott, are facing charges of felony child neglect after allegedly forcing their six-year-old daughter to stand outside in freezing temperatures holding a sign threatening her brother. The incident occurred on a day when the temperature was only 18 degrees, prompting a concerned witness to call 911.

The sign the girl was holding read, “I want to stab and Kill my brother — I even take an antipsychotic — If you need to give pity — then give it to the victims.” When Officer Scott arrived at the scene along with his supervisor, the witness expressed concern about the girl being left outside in the cold with the threatening sign. Scott admitted to being responsible for the girl’s treatment but defended his actions, stating that she went inside every 10 minutes to warm up.

Scott explained to the witness that his daughter had behavioral issues and had been in therapy for three years. He mentioned that she had been taken to the hospital twice but was “kicked out.” His wife, Kylie Scott, later told investigators that their daughter was forced to hold the sign because she was upset about not being allowed to wear lip gloss.

This was not the first time the girl had been subjected to such punishment. The caseworker revealed that the girl had previously been made to carry a sign to school that said, “I pee on everything and cover it up like a cat,” and another sign at Walmart that read, “I lie to hurt other people.” The parents acknowledged that their daughter had behavioral disorders that required medication, but the investigator noted that this admission could make the alleged crime worse.

Following the incident, Cody Scott was placed on leave without pay by the Logansport Board of Public Works. The Logansport Police chief stated that Scott was put on leave and the investigation was handed over to the Indiana State Police within hours of the incident in January.
