Inspired by late friend, Mount Saint Vincent coach Mark Forward looks back on 300 career wins
Inside Mark Forward’s cramped office, located next to the gym at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, hangs a banner with the words, “One Way Together.” This phrase holds deep significance for Forward, the head coach of the women’s basketball team, as it is a tribute to his dear friend, Dyrick McDermott, who passed away in 2009. McDermott was the women’s basketball coach for eight years and is remembered for starting the cheer that embodied unity and support among the team.
Forward recently achieved a milestone in his coaching career, reaching 300 career wins last month. This achievement is a testament to his dedication and commitment to carrying on McDermott’s legacy, who had an impressive record of 160 wins and only 17 losses during his tenure as coach.
Reflecting on his playing days at Mount Saint Vincent University, Forward remembers the valuable lessons he learned from his coach, Rick Plato. Plato instilled in him an intense work ethic and the importance of being obsessed with winning. Another crucial lesson was the significance of punctuality, with Plato insisting that players be early for team events.
Following his playing career, Forward transitioned into coaching, starting as an assistant under Plato’s guidance. Despite a few hiccups along the way, such as players forgetting their shoes before a game, Forward embraced the challenges and grew as a coach.
In 2009, Forward faced the daunting task of taking over the women’s basketball team after McDermott’s sudden passing. The transition was emotional and challenging, but Forward’s dedication to honoring his friend’s memory and connecting with his players helped the team navigate through the difficult season.
Amanda Pearcey, co-captain of the women’s basketball team, attests to Forward’s caring nature and his ability to foster a sense of family among the players. Team bonding activities and a shared sense of responsibility contribute to the team’s unity and success.
Plato commends Forward’s achievements, acknowledging his place among an exclusive group of successful coaches. Despite the accolades and banners displayed in the Mount gym, Forward remains focused on the next game and the pursuit of victory.
As Forward continues to lead the women’s basketball team with passion and dedication, he embodies the spirit of “One Way Together,” striving for unity, support, and success both on and off the court.
