Insurance group releases list of Ontario’s 10 most stolen vehicles 2023

The top 10 most frequently stolen vehicles in Ontario last year include the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover, the 2022 Land Rover Defender, and the 2021 Cadillac Escalade Series. Brian Gast, vice president of Équité’s investigative services division, points out that criminals are making over $1 billion from stolen cars in Ontario alone. This money is often used to fund organized crime activities, posing a significant threat to public safety.

Équité’s report also highlights a 48% increase in auto theft in Ontario from 2021 to 2023, with a car being stolen in Canada every five minutes. In response to these alarming trends, federal and provincial governments, along with police services across the Greater Toronto Area, have introduced initiatives to combat car theft. However, Gast emphasizes that more needs to be done to address this growing issue.

One proposed solution is to enhance the security features of vehicles sold in Canada. By implementing stricter security measures, such as trackers and immobilizers, drivers can better protect their vehicles from theft. Gast emphasizes the importance of investing in these security measures to safeguard against potential theft incidents.

In addition to traditional car thefts, Peel Regional Police, York Regional Police, and Toronto Police Services have observed an increase in violent crimes related to vehicle theft. Home invasions linked to car theft have risen by nearly 140% in Toronto, while carjackings have increased by 18%. This troubling trend underscores the need for increased vigilance and security measures to protect against violent theft attempts.

Det. Greg O’Connor of Peel Regional Police stresses the importance of prioritizing personal safety in the event of a carjacking or home invasion. He advises drivers to prioritize their well-being over material possessions and recommends cooperating with perpetrators to avoid escalating violence.
