Iran executes over 1,000 prisoners in 2024, highest total in 30 years report says
In a shocking report released by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), it has been revealed that the Islamic Republic of Iran executed over 1,000 prisoners in 86 prisons across the country in the year 2024. This alarming death toll is described as “an unprecedented figure in the past three decades,” marking a 16% increase from the previous year’s 864 executions.
The majority of these executions took place in the latter half of the year, with almost 70% occurring after the July election of President Masoud Pezeshkian. The NCRI noted that about 47% of these executions occurred in the fourth quarter of 2024, a period when the regime was facing severe defeats in the region and mounting economic and social crises.
Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the NCRI, condemned these executions as a desperate attempt by the regime to suppress any uprising from the populace. She emphasized that these “medieval crimes” only serve to strengthen the resolve of Iran’s youth to overthrow the oppressive regime.
The report also highlighted the disturbing fact that public executions in Iran are often witnessed by children, further emphasizing the brutal and inhumane nature of these executions. The NCRI called for an end to these executions and for the regime’s leaders to be held accountable for their crimes against humanity.
Fox News Digital reached out to the Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations for comment on these executions, but the Mission declined to provide a response. Behnam Ben Taleblu, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, expressed concern over the increasing number of executions by the regime, especially targeting political prisoners and non-violent offenders.
The NCRI report also revealed that among the executed prisoners were women, juveniles, Afghan nationals, and individuals from ethnic and religious minorities, including the Baluchi minority. The fact-finding mission by the United Nations highlighted the disproportionate impact of the regime’s response on these minority groups.
One of the most high-profile cases of execution in 2024 was that of journalist Jamshid Sharmahd, a German citizen and U.S. resident who was kidnapped in Dubai in 2020. Sharmahd was executed in October after a grossly unfair trial. The report also shared the heartbreaking letter of political prisoner Saeed Masouri, who described the constant fear and uncertainty of facing imminent execution.
As the new year began, the NCRI reported that 12 prisoners were executed on the first day of 2025 at various Iranian prisons. The alarming trend of escalating executions in Iran continues to raise concerns among human rights organizations and advocates worldwide.
In light of these disturbing developments, it is imperative for the international community to take a stand against the Iranian regime’s brutal practices and hold its leaders accountable for their egregious human rights violations. The fight for justice and freedom in Iran must continue unabated, and the voices of the oppressed must be heard and supported.
