Iran hiring young kids to attack Israeli targets
Iran has resorted to a disturbing new tactic in its ongoing proxy war against Israel by recruiting young children to carry out attacks on Israeli and Jewish targets across Europe. This trend has emerged as Iran faces setbacks in the Middle East, with its proxies suffering defeats and its influence waning.
Recent incidents in Sweden, Belgium, and Norway have highlighted this troubling pattern. In Stockholm, a 15-year-old boy armed with a loaded gun attempted to reach the Israeli Embassy but was intercepted by Swedish police before he could carry out his intended attack. Authorities had been monitoring him for several months prior to the incident.
In Gothenburg, a 13-year-old was caught firing shots at Israeli defense firm Elbit Systems, while a 16-year-old helped plant homemade explosives outside the same facility. In Brussels, security services thwarted an attack on the Israeli Embassy orchestrated by children as young as 14.
Recruiters acting on behalf of the Iranian regime have been targeting minors through social media platforms like Telegram, TikTok, and WhatsApp. This new strategy comes at a time when Iran’s influence in the region has significantly weakened, particularly due to Israel’s responses to attacks from Iranian-backed groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.
The recent ouster of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has further compounded Iran’s troubles in the region. Some of the young people recruited by Iran are driven by frustration over Israel’s actions in Gaza, while others are motivated by financial incentives. In Sweden and Norway, individuals under the age of 15 cannot be prosecuted for certain offenses, which adds to the complexity of addressing this issue.
The Swedish Security Service has noted that some proxies may not be fully aware that they are acting on behalf of a foreign power. For example, the 16-year-old who attacked Elbit Systems used explosives in his assault and was charged alongside a 23-year-old accomplice.
Sweden has been grappling with a rise in organized criminal gangs recruiting minors from immigrant communities. With a significant portion of the population being foreign-born, assimilation challenges have contributed to vulnerabilities that are exploited by recruiters.
In light of these developments, it is clear that Iran’s use of children in its proxy war against Israel poses a serious threat that must be addressed through coordinated efforts at the national and international levels.
