Iranian officials are banned from Canada — but this former regime member landed in April

to the Immigration and Refugee Board for a hearing. But Shahriari says those numbers are low given the size of the Iranian diaspora in Canada. \”It\’s almost laughable,\” she said. Shahriari said the fact that Nasiri was able to enter Canada despite his past is concerning. \”It means we are not doing a very good job at enforcing our laws,\” she said. Shahriari said Canada needs to be more diligent in vetting individuals with ties to oppressive regimes, especially those who have held senior positions. \”We need to make sure that we are not giving safe haven to individuals who have been directly involved in human rights abuses,\” she said. Shahrooz said he wants Nasiri to be investigated by Canadian security officials to determine if he poses a threat to Canadian security or has committed crimes against humanity. \”It is incumbent on the government to act and investigate and make sure that people who are coming to Canada are not going to use our system as a safe haven to continue their activities against the Iranian people,\” he said. CBC News reached out to the RCMP to ask if Nasiri is being investigated, but did not receive a response by deadline. Nasiri says he is willing to co-operate with any investigation and is confident he will be cleared. \”I have no reason to fear any investigation or legal action in Canada. My conscience is clear and I have not committed any crimes,\” he said. He said he came to Canada to visit his son and experience the country\’s culture and diversity. \”I have always been a supporter of human rights, democracy and the rule of law, and have never been involved in any violence or criminal activity,\” he said. Nasiri said he has been welcomed by the Iranian community in Canada and is grateful for the support he has received. \”I hope to continue contributing to Canada and promoting peace and democracy in Iran,\” he said. He said he plans to continue speaking out against the Iranian regime and advocating for human rights. \”I am not afraid of the Islamic Republic or its agents. I will continue to fight for freedom and democracy in Iran,\” he said. \”I hope Canada will continue to be a safe haven for those who are oppressed and persecuted by dictatorial regimes.\”
