ISANS opens new Halifax centre as friendly space for newcomer youth
The Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia (ISANS) has recently unveiled a brand new centre aimed at providing support to young newcomers to Canada and their families. Located in west-end Halifax, the Youth and Family Centre caters to individuals between the ages of 13 to 30, offering programs that focus on education and job skills development.
“Feedback from our young participants indicated a desire for a dedicated space where they can connect with one another and engage in various activities,” stated Paula Knight, the CEO of ISANS. “This centre serves as a hub for them to come together and access the resources they need.”
Situated near the main ISANS office on Mumford Road, the Youth and Family Centre was designed with input from youth to ensure a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. Equipped with features such as dimmable lights, a small kitchenette, and artwork created by program participants, the space serves both as a learning environment and a recreational hangout.
One such participant, Reem Halawani, who relocated to Canada from Turkey in 2021, expressed her appreciation for the centre’s offerings. “The support provided here is invaluable for newcomers like myself. From improving English skills to building resumes and connecting with potential employers, the centre covers a wide range of essential services,” she shared.
During a recent session focused on conflict resolution in career settings, Hanin Kassas, a newcomer from Egypt who arrived in 2023, emphasized the practical skills she has gained through an 11-week career skills course. This program, which includes participants from various backgrounds like Syria, Rwanda, and Ethiopia, culminates in a 600-hour work placement to further enhance their employability.
Kassas expressed her enthusiasm for the course and her aspirations for a placement in an office environment. “The insights we’ve gained about the Canadian workplace and the opportunities to enhance our skills have been invaluable. I’m excited to see where this experience takes me,” she remarked.
ISANS reported that in the previous year, over 4,800 youth clients benefited from their services. The centre’s official opening was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by newcomer youth, underscoring the importance of this new facility in supporting the integration and success of young immigrants in Canada.
