Israel releases 90 Palestinian prisoners as part of cease-fire deal to free hostages

Israel has released 90 Palestinian prisoners to cheering crowds in the West Bank following the return of three Israeli hostages from Hamas captivity in Gaza. The atmosphere was jubilant as supporters were seen waving Hamas flags after climbing on top of the buses carrying detainees from Israel’s Ofer prison, just outside the West Bank city of Ramallah.

All of those freed were women and teenagers who were being held on charges related to Israeli state security. Among them was 62-year-old Khalida Jarrar, a leading member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a group designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. Jarrar, who has been in and out of Israeli prison in recent years, spoke to the news agency about the conflicting emotions she felt upon her release.

Bara’a Al-Fuqha, a 22-year-old medical student at Al-Quds University in East Jerusalem, also expressed a mix of relief and concern upon her release. She had spent around six months in prison under administrative detention, a policy of indefinite imprisonment without formal charge or trial. Al-Fuqha shared her gratitude for being reunited with her family but also acknowledged the ongoing suffering of Palestinians in Gaza.

The hostage deal between Israel and Hamas involves the gradual release of 33 Israeli hostages held in Gaza over the next six weeks in exchange for the release of nearly 2,000 prisoners and detainees from the West Bank and Gaza. The first three hostages released by Hamas were all young women, identified as Doron Steinbrecher, Romi Gonen, and Emily Damari.

As the released prisoners and hostages reunited with their families, a sense of both joy and concern permeated the air. The impact of their ordeals was evident as they underwent medical tests to assess their physical and mental well-being after their harrowing experiences.
