Ivy League suspect in CEO murder huddles with legal team, not family: sources
Luigi Mangione, the alleged CEO killer, has been in contact with his lawyers multiple times but has yet to receive a visit from his family, according to sources. Mangione recently met with attorneys Karen Agnifilo, Marc Agnifilo, and Thomas Dickey in Blair County, Pennsylvania, where he is being held.
Karen Agnifilo, a former chief assistant district attorney in Manhattan, will be representing Mangione as he faces a second-degree murder charge in New York for the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on Dec. 4. Agnifilo has extensive experience in New York City’s criminal justice system, having worked in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office for seven years before moving to private practice.
Thomas Dickey, a seasoned trial attorney in Pennsylvania with over 40 years of experience, is also part of Mangione’s legal team.
Recent developments in the case have linked Mangione to the 3D-printed gun found in his possession during his arrest to the shell casings recovered at the crime scene in Manhattan. His fingerprints were also a match to those found on items near the shooting location.
Despite these findings, Mangione’s attorneys maintain his innocence and plan for him to plead not guilty to the murder charge and other related charges in both New York and Pennsylvania. The suspect is facing additional charges in Pennsylvania for carrying a gun without a license, forgery, falsely identifying himself to authorities, and possessing “instruments of crime.”
A Pennsylvania judge denied Mangione bail last week, leaving him incarcerated at the Huntingdon State Correctional Institution. The suspect’s family, while devastated by his arrest, has not publicly addressed the situation.
Mangione’s motivations for the alleged crime appear to stem from frustrations with the health insurance industry and perceived corporate greed, despite not being an insured member of UnitedHealthcare.
The legal proceedings surrounding Mangione’s case are ongoing, with his attorneys preparing for a vigorous defense in both states. As the investigation continues, more details are expected to emerge regarding the events leading up to the tragic shooting in Manhattan.
