US Election 2024

Jack Reed writes Kristi Noem with a REAL ID travel warning

The deadline for REAL ID requirements is quickly approaching on May 7, and Sen. Jack Reed is demanding answers from the Trump administration regarding potentially stranded American travelers. Reed wrote a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem expressing concerns over the enforcement of the law, which requires minimum security standards for driver’s licenses or other identification for domestic flights.

The REAL ID Act of 2005 was passed in response to the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission, but delays in implementation have persisted through multiple administrations. President Trump signed legislation in 2020 giving DHS discretion on when to begin enforcement, leading to the upcoming May 7 deadline.

According to TSA, around 20 percent of air travelers still do not have a REAL ID-compliant form of identification. Millions of Americans may be affected by this requirement, as they do not possess a compliant license, passport, or military ID card. Sen. Reed is seeking assurance from Secretary Noem that there will not be delays at TSA security checkpoints and wants to know what steps TSA is taking to process travelers without compliant identification.

REAL ID has been a contentious issue since its inception, with both bipartisan support and opposition. Conservative groups praised the law for bolstering security measures, while others raised concerns about privacy and government overreach. Rep. Thomas Massie recently warned that REAL ID is not intended to address election integrity, contrary to some beliefs.

DHS has pushed back on claims that REAL ID will create a national database of driver’s license information, stating that each jurisdiction will continue to issue its own unique license and control access to records. The purpose of REAL ID, according to DHS, is to make identity documents more secure and consistent.

As the deadline approaches, DHS is working to inform the public, facilitate compliance, reduce wait times, and prevent fraud. Sen. Reed’s letter underscores the need for clarity and preparation as the REAL ID requirements go into effect. The Trump administration must address concerns about potential disruptions for travelers and ensure a smooth transition to the new security standards.
