Jagmeet Singh asks premiers to match his pledge to remove sales tax from daily essentials

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh Calls on Premiers to Match GST Removal Pledge

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has taken a bold step in his campaign promises by pledging to remove the GST from daily essentials, such as grocery-store meals, diapers, kids’ clothing, home heating, cell phone, and internet bills. In a statement released on Wednesday, Singh urged Canada’s premiers to follow suit by eliminating their provincial sales taxes on these essential items.

“Working people are being gouged every time they pay their cell phone bill or stop at the grocery store to grab something for dinner,” Singh emphasized. “My tax-free essentials pledge, plus provincial sales tax relief, would go a long way to giving people some breathing room.”

To fund this tax cut, Singh proposed the introduction of an “excess profits tax” on large corporations that are allegedly inflating prices to increase their profit margins. This move is intended to ease the financial burden on Canadians and ensure fair pricing for essential goods and services.

Earlier this month, Singh made headlines by announcing the termination of the supply-and-confidence agreement his party had with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government. The agreement, which was established in March 2022, involved the NDP supporting the minority Liberal government on confidence votes in exchange for commitments on NDP priorities.

Despite the end of this agreement potentially paving the way for an early federal election, Singh has refrained from aligning with the Conservatives and Bloc Quebecois in triggering a non-confidence vote against the Liberals. He stated, “I will not let Pierre Poilievre, the ‘King Cut,’ or the Bloc call the shots,” emphasizing his commitment to prioritizing policies that benefit Canadians during challenging times.

As Singh continues to advocate for tax relief on essential items and hold corporations accountable for fair pricing, his efforts are resonating with voters who are seeking financial relief and support during uncertain economic times. By urging provincial leaders to align with his GST removal pledge, Singh is championing a more affordable and equitable future for all Canadians.
