Jagmeet Singh says the only way to stop a Liberal ‘super majority’ is to vote NDP

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is urging voters to support New Democrats in order to prevent a potential Liberal “super majority” in the upcoming election. Public opinion polls indicate that the Liberals could secure a majority government, while the NDP risks losing its official party status. This shift in the political landscape has been attributed to former prime minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation and the election of Mark Carney as the new Liberal leader, as well as the global trade war and aggressive rhetoric from U.S. President Donald Trump.

Campaigning in Vancouver, Singh emphasized the importance of voting for the NDP to combat potential post-election cuts to health care. He specifically called on British Columbians to play a crucial role in the election, stating that their support could make a difference in preventing Carney from gaining a super majority.

Singh expressed concerns about Carney’s proposed $28 billion in cuts to essential services, including health care. He argued that Carney’s promise to balance the budget could result in reduced health transfers to the provinces, despite Carney’s assurances to the contrary. Singh also criticized Carney’s previous involvement with Brookfield Asset Management, highlighting the company’s ownership of Healthscope, a for-profit hospital chain in Australia.

In response, Carney’s Liberal platform emphasizes health care as a fundamental right and pledges to enhance medical services by recruiting more doctors, improving labour mobility for health-care professionals, and supporting the establishment of new clinics. The Canada Health Act prohibits health-care providers from charging for covered services under the country’s single-payer system.

When asked about his future as NDP leader, Singh remained focused on the election and highlighted the party’s role in advocating for important issues like the implementation of a national dental-care program. He emphasized the NDP’s ability to pressure the Liberals to prioritize the needs of Canadians and deliver on essential services.

Establishing a national dental-care program was a key policy priority in the NDP’s previous support agreement with the Liberal government. As the election approaches, Singh continues to rally support for the NDP as a critical voice in holding the government accountable and advocating for the interests of Canadians.
