US Election 2024

Johnson allies urge Trump to intervene as messy speaker battle threatens to delay 2024 certification

Allies of Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., are making a strong push for President-elect Trump to publicly reaffirm his support for the House GOP leader in order to avoid a messy and protracted battle that could potentially delay the certification of his own victory.

In a recent interview with Fox News Digital, Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla., emphasized the importance of avoiding a prolonged fight over the speakership, stating that any delays could impact the certification of the election results. He stressed the need for President Trump to intervene and encourage hesitant lawmakers to move forward with the process.

Similarly, Rep. Pat Fallon, R-Texas, echoed Gimenez’s sentiments, stating that Trump’s endorsement would be immensely helpful in solidifying support for Johnson. Fallon suggested that a public statement from Trump, particularly after Christmas, would carry significant weight and help expedite the selection of a speaker.

With House lawmakers set to convene in Washington, D.C., for a vote to elect the speaker on January 3, followed by the certification of the 2024 election results on January 6, Johnson is facing a tough battle to secure the speakership for a full Congressional term. Several House Republicans have expressed concerns about Johnson’s leadership and decision-making, adding to the uncertainty surrounding his candidacy.

It is worth noting that Johnson’s predecessor faced multiple defeats before ultimately securing the speakership after negotiations with holdouts. The potential for a drawn-out battle within the GOP could disrupt the certification process and delay the implementation of Trump’s agenda.

Rep. Claudia Tenney, R-N.Y., emphasized the urgency of electing a speaker to ensure a smooth transition and the prompt initiation of Trump’s proposed policies. She warned that any delays could hinder the launch of Trump’s agenda and create unnecessary obstacles for the incoming administration.

The recent passage of a bill to extend federal funding until March 14, following a narrow vote in Congress, has further heightened tensions within the GOP. Johnson’s attempts to address Trump’s demands regarding the debt limit were met with resistance, leading to divisions within the party.

Despite criticisms from some House Republicans, Trump’s support for Johnson could play a decisive role in determining the outcome of the speakership race. Top Trump allies, including Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, have come to Johnson’s defense, highlighting his conservative credentials and alignment with Trump’s priorities.

As the January 3 vote approaches, Johnson finds himself with a slim margin of support within the GOP caucus. With Trump’s endorsement potentially swaying the final decision, the outcome of the speakership race remains uncertain. The involvement of key players, including Trump and his allies, will be crucial in determining the future leadership of the House of Representatives.
