Johnson says ‘a man cannot become a woman’ after question on transgender Rep

House Speaker Mike Johnson made a clarification on Tuesday after previously declining to answer a reporter’s question on whether transgender Rep.-elect Sarah McBride, D-Del., is a man or a woman. Johnson addressed reporters in the Capitol Tuesday afternoon, stating, “A man is a man, and a woman is a woman. And a man cannot become a woman.”

Johnson emphasized his long-standing beliefs and values on the issue, citing Scripture teachings as the foundation for his stance. He also emphasized the importance of treating everyone with dignity and respect, despite differing viewpoints. Johnson’s statement came in response to a question posed earlier at the House GOP weekly press conference regarding McBride’s gender identity.

When asked about a resolution introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., aimed at prohibiting the use of single-sex facilities based on gender identity, Johnson reiterated his commitment to treating all individuals with respect. Mace had expressed concerns about the safety and privacy of women and girls in private spaces, citing her own experiences as a survivor of abuse.

Mace’s resolution, which seeks to restrict transgender individuals from using facilities that correspond to their gender identity, has sparked controversy and debate within the House. McBride criticized the resolution as a distraction from important issues facing Americans and labeled it as an attempt by far-right extremists to deflect attention.

In response to Mace’s resolution and the ongoing debate, Johnson assured Mace that he would consider adding the resolution to the House rules package. Mace vowed to fight for the protection of women and girls in private spaces, stating that she would take further legislative action if necessary.

The issue of transgender rights and access to facilities has become a contentious topic within Congress, with differing opinions and strong emotions on both sides. Johnson’s clarification and Mace’s resolution highlight the ongoing debate surrounding gender identity and privacy concerns in public spaces. As the discussion continues, it is essential for lawmakers to find a balance between upholding individual rights and ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals.
