House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom for his “anti-Christian rhetoric” following a deadly shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minnesota. Johnson, addressing reporters after lawmakers returned from a recess, condemned Newsom for mocking the victims of the tragic incident where two children were killed and 17 others were injured during morning Mass.
Newsom’s Controversial Response
Johnson highlighted Newsom’s response on social media to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt’s defense of prayer in the wake of the shooting. Newsom’s comments, in which he rebuked the White House for advocating prayer, were deemed as insensitive and disrespectful by Johnson.
“These children were literally praying as they got shot at,” Newsom fired back, sparking outrage from Johnson and others.
Strong Criticism from Johnson
Describing Newsom’s remarks as “sick,” Johnson expressed disbelief at the governor’s lack of empathy towards the victims and their families. He condemned Newsom for his apparent disregard for the role of prayer in times of tragedy.
“It’s detestable. Two children were murdered. More than a dozen were hospitalized, and Gavin Newsom’s response was to sneer and condemn those who seek out our creator in the darkest moments,” Johnson stated.
Call for Action on Mental Health and Crime
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer attributed the school shooting to Democratic policies and a growing mental health crisis nationwide. Emmer emphasized the need to address mental health issues and empower law enforcement to tackle crime effectively.
While Republicans have advocated for prayer and criticized Democratic responses to the shooting, Democratic lawmakers like Newsom have called for legislative action on gun control.
Unity in the Aftermath
As the nation grapples with the aftermath of the school shooting, leaders from both parties have expressed a shared goal of ensuring safety and peace for all citizens. Regardless of political differences, the focus remains on preventing such tragedies in the future.
