Jordan Spieth says you’re not ‘supposed to talk about’ mud balls at Masters

Jordan Spieth didn’t just make waves on the golf course at Augusta National this past weekend, he also made headlines at the podium. The 31-year-old golfer revealed that he had been dealing with mud balls during his second and third rounds, and he expressed frustration at the Masters organizers for discouraging discussion about this issue.

In an interview with the New York Post after his round on Saturday, Spieth didn’t hold back. “My iron play killed me the last two days and, to be brutally honest with you, it was primarily mud balls,” he said. “It’s just so frustrating because you can’t talk about them here. You’re not supposed to talk about them.”

Spieth explained how mud balls can significantly impact the tournament, especially on holes like the 11th and 13th at Augusta National. Despite the challenges posed by mud balls, Spieth managed to navigate his way through the course with varied results on these holes throughout the tournament.

The former Masters champion highlighted the difficulty of playing on a course like Augusta National with the added challenge of mud balls. “There’s like less (mud balls) than normal, but I still had them today on those holes. I had them (Friday) on those holes,” Spieth said. “It’s something to pay attention to for sure for leader groups, because you just have to play so far away from trouble or lay up when you’d normally go for it.”

Spieth also touched on the impact of mud balls on driving accuracy and the difficulty of hitting shots into the greens. Despite his frustrations, Spieth managed to finish in a tie for 14th place at this year’s Masters, shooting 3-under par for the tournament after a strong weekend performance.
