Judge blocks anti-Israel Columbia agitator from deportation

A federal judge in Manhattan made a significant ruling on Monday, stating that anti-Israel activist Mahmoud Khalil should not be deported unless ordered by the court. Khalil, who is known for leading anti-Israel protests and encampments at Columbia University, was taken into custody in New York City over the weekend by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The DHS alleged that Khalil had ties to Hamas, a designated terrorist organization.

Following his arrest, Khalil’s lawyer argued that his client had been detained unlawfully and should be released. As a result, a hearing was scheduled for Wednesday to further address the situation. Politicians, including Rep. Rashida Tlaib, came to Khalil’s defense, condemning his arrest as a violation of constitutional rights.

In a social media post, Tlaib expressed her concerns about the targeting of individuals based on their political speech, emphasizing the need to protect constitutional rights for all. Tlaib also criticized the government’s handling of Khalil’s case, highlighting his status as a legal permanent resident rather than a student visa holder.

New York State Attorney General Letitia James echoed Tlaib’s sentiments, expressing worries about Khalil’s arrest and detention. James assured that her office was monitoring the situation closely and in contact with Khalil’s attorney.

Khalil’s legal representative, Amy E. Greer, released a statement asserting that her client had been wrongfully arrested by ICE agents. Despite Khalil’s permanent resident status, the agents allegedly detained him under false pretenses.

President Donald Trump, on the other hand, applauded Khalil’s arrest, labeling it as the first of many to come. Trump emphasized his administration’s zero-tolerance policy towards individuals engaged in anti-American and terrorist activities. He vowed to locate, apprehend, and deport such individuals from the country.

As the situation unfolds, ICE has confirmed that Khalil is currently detained at the Lasalle Detention facility in Louisiana. The developments surrounding Khalil’s case continue to raise questions about free speech, constitutional rights, and the government’s approach to handling individuals with differing political views.
