Kentucky Senate candidate slams ‘Democrat lawfare’ over ethics investigation

The Kentucky Executive Branch Ethics Commission has decided to proceed with an investigation into U.S. Senate candidate Daniel Cameron. The allegations date back to July 2023 when Cameron, who was the Kentucky attorney general and gubernatorial candidate at the time, allegedly solicited campaign donations from a company his office was investigating.

In an exclusive statement to Fox News Digital, Daniel Cameron compared the investigation to what he believes was done to President Trump, calling it a “shameless weaponization of government to take out political opponents.” He believes that this is a tactic of Democrat lawfare in the 2026 election cycle, as he is leading the GOP field by more than 20 points.

The Associated Press reported in July 2023 that Edgewater Recovery Centers, a company under investigation by Cameron’s attorney general’s office, received a call from Cameron and a campaign representative to organize a fundraiser. Several Edgewater executives donated $7,600 to Cameron’s gubernatorial campaign. However, as soon as details of the transactions were made public, plans for the fundraiser were canceled, and the campaign funds were returned.

Cameron’s current U.S. Senate campaign confirmed that he recused himself from the investigation into Edgewater, canceled the events, and refunded the checks to the executives. The investigation was called for by Democratic Governor Andy Beshear in 2023, and it is now being pursued two years later.

Meanwhile, Cameron’s campaign for Mitch McConnell’s soon-to-be-vacant U.S. Senate seat is in full swing. Republican Rep. Andy Barr is the only other declared GOP candidate in the race. The news of the investigation comes at a critical time in the campaign as both candidates vie for the seat.

Governor Beshear’s name has also been floated as a possible Democratic presidential candidate in 2028, adding another layer of intrigue to the political landscape in Kentucky. Fox News Digital reached out to Beshear’s office for comment, but did not receive a response.

The Kentucky Executive Branch Ethics Commission has not responded to inquiries about the investigation. Preston Mizell, a writer with Fox News Digital covering breaking news, can be reached at Preston.Mizell@fox.com for story tips and updates on this developing story.
