Kim Kardashian wears Diana’s crucifix necklace in first public outing
Kim Kardashian Makes a Statement with Diamond-Lined Cross Pendant
Kim Kardashian is known for her bold fashion choices and her ability to wear pieces with historical significance. Over the years, she has been seen in attire once belonging to iconic figures like Marilyn Monroe, Janet Jackson, and Jackie Kennedy. Her collection even includes rare treasures such as Elizabeth Taylor’s diamond and jade bracelet. In 2022, she added to her collection by acquiring Michael Jackson’s white fedora from the “Smooth Criminal” music video for her daughter North’s Halloween costume.
At the recent LACMA Art+Film Gala in Los Angeles, Kardashian debuted another cultural artifact — a diamond-lined cross pendant that was once a favorite of Princess Diana. Purchased for £163,800 (around US$212,000) at a Sotheby’s auction in January 2023, this necklace had not been worn in public since Diana’s passing in 1997.
The cross pendant, adorned with approximately 5.25 carats of diamonds, was crafted by British court jewelers Garrard in the early 20th century. It was previously owned by the late Palestinian-British businessman Naim Attallah, who lent it to Diana on several occasions, including a charity gala in 1987 where she paired it with a maroon velvet gown by Catherine Walker.
Kardashian put her own spin on the necklace by shortening the pearl chain and pairing it with a stack of jewels, including a six-strand pearl choker. Despite some online criticism regarding the combination of the religious symbol with her daring neckline, Kim used the pendant to add a pop of color to her all-white ensemble.
The debate surrounding Kardashian’s access to and wear of historical artifacts continues, with some questioning the preservation of these precious heirlooms in her possession. However, when Kardashian acquired the pendant, Sotheby’s head of jewelry in London expressed excitement over its new ownership and the statement it would make in the hands of a globally famous figure.
