King Charles about to deliver throne speech at Senate after horse-drawn carriage ride through Ottawa

The Coronation Girls: A Unique Connection to the Royal Family

As King Charles arrives in Ottawa to deliver a historic speech from the throne, CBC’s chief correspondent Adrienne Arsenault connects with a Canadian who shares a unique connection to the Royal Family that dates back to 1953.

The Coronation Girls, a group of Canadian women who have a special bond with the Royal Family, recently had the opportunity to see King Charles for the second time. Carol Shipley, one of the Coronation Girls, reminisced about their tea with the King at Buckingham Palace in December of 2023 and expressed her excitement at being able to meet him again during his visit to Ottawa.

The Coronation Girls were the subjects of a documentary feature film that premiered last year, following their journey to England in 2023 to retrace the steps of a trip they took as teenagers during Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953. Three of the Coronation Girls were present at Rideau Hall to witness King Charles and Camilla planting a blue beech tree.

Shipley shared her thoughts on the significance of King Charles planting a tree, noting his early concern for the environment. She mentioned a poignant moment at the palace when Yvonne Harris, another Coronation Girl, spoke to Charles about their shared passion for environmental conservation, emphasizing the importance of trees as the lungs of our planet.

Sadly, Yvonne passed away two months ago, but Shipley expressed gratitude to King Charles for his support during this crucial time in Canada’s history. She highlighted the importance of protecting the nation’s sovereignty and appreciated His Majesty’s presence in showing solidarity with their efforts.
