Katy Knoll Scores Triple OT Winner as Minnesota Frost Take 2-1 Series Lead
On Saturday night in St. Paul, Minnesota, Katy Knoll scored a goal in the third overtime to help the Minnesota Frost beat the Ottawa Charge 2-1 in the PWHL championship series. This victory gives the Frost a 2-1 lead in the series, with the chance to clinch the title in Game 4 at Xcel Energy Center on Monday.
Maddie Rooney was a standout performer for the Frost, finishing with 35 saves to secure the win. On the other side, Gwyneth Philips put on a strong performance for Ottawa with 45 saves.
The game-winning goal came 9:57 into the third overtime period when Klara Hymlarova took a shot from the point that was initially saved by Philips. However, Knoll was in the right place at the right time to score on the backhand and seal the victory for Minnesota.
Emily Clark opened the scoring for Ottawa in the first period, but Lee Stecklein responded for the Frost in the third quarter to tie the game at 1-1. The teams were deadlocked until Knoll’s heroics in the third overtime.
This thrilling triple-overtime game marked the first time in PWHL Finals history that a game had gone to triple OT. The series has been incredibly close, with both teams trading overtime victories in Games 1 and 2.
The Minnesota Frost, the defending Walter Cup champions, are now just one win away from securing their second consecutive title. With the momentum on their side, they will look to close out the series in Game 4 and lift the championship trophy once again.
