‘Knows how to get things done’: Border Patrol union rallies around Noem as DHS chief

The National Border Patrol Council (NBPC), a labor union representing thousands of Border Patrol agents, has thrown its full support behind South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem as the next Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). In a letter addressed to Sens. Gary Peters and Rand Paul, the chair and ranking member of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs, NBPC President Paul Perez urged for Noem’s swift confirmation.

The DHS, which oversees U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the U.S. Secret Service, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, plays a crucial role in safeguarding the nation’s borders and national security. According to Perez, Governor Noem has demonstrated her ability to “get things done” both in South Dakota and on the national stage, particularly during her support of Texas’ “Operation Lone Star” to combat the immigration crisis.

Perez praised Noem as a seasoned leader who has shown integrity and excellence in her roles as the chief executive of South Dakota and as a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives. He highlighted her proactive approach in deploying South Dakota National Guard personnel to the Texas border, emphasizing the importance of bolstering resources to protect Americans from illegal immigration, drug cartels, and human trafficking.

Governor Noem has consistently taken a strong stance on border security, deploying National Guard troops multiple times to assist in constructing a border wall and stemming illegal border crossings. Her unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring public safety has garnered widespread support from law enforcement groups, including the Fraternal Order of Police.

As Governor Noem continues to engage with Senate lawmakers to rally support for her confirmation, there is a growing anticipation for her to assume the role and address the pressing challenges facing the nation’s borders. With a focus on securing the border and enhancing homeland security, Governor Noem’s leadership is poised to make a significant impact in safeguarding the country from external threats and ensuring the safety of all Americans.
