LA, Chicago, NYC could lose federal transportation money over ICE stance

The Trump administration’s Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy issued a stern warning to “rogue state actors” who are not cooperating with ICE and federal immigration enforcement. Duffy made it clear that such states may be left to clean up their own mess if they do not adhere to federal laws.

As riots and fires continue to plague Los Angeles and other cities across the country, Duffy emphasized the need for political leaders to work more closely with the Trump administration. He stated that the USDOT will not provide funding to states that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement, nor to cities that allow rioters to destroy transportation infrastructure.

One state that may fall under Duffy’s warning is California, where Governor Gavin Newsom has been at odds with the Trump administration over the federalization of the California National Guard and the response to the chaos in the streets. President Donald Trump commended ICE officers for their dedication to the largest mass deportation operation in history, despite facing opposition and threats from radical Democrat politicians.

In a message echoed by Duffy, Trump called for ICE to focus on crime-ridden inner cities and places where sanctuary cities are prominent. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson criticized the federal government, likening its actions to those of the 19th Century Confederacy. However, New York Mayor Eric Adams instructed his office and the NYPD not to impede federal authorities from carrying out their duties.

Despite the backlash, Newsom’s spokesman Daniel VillaseƱor defended California’s efforts to coordinate with federal immigration authorities in cases involving individuals convicted of serious crimes. VillaseƱor highlighted the state’s compliance with both state and federal laws, with Newsom’s initiatives being upheld by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

In contrast, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed concerns about the impact of ICE raids on immigrant labor and the city’s workforce. She emphasized the disruption and fear caused by the raids, which have had a detrimental effect on the local economy.

Overall, the Trump administration is taking a firm stance on immigration enforcement, with federal grants being contingent on compliance with federal law. While some may criticize these efforts, others see them as necessary to maintain public safety and uphold the rule of law.
