LA Hughes Fire only 14% contained after burning 10K acres
The Hughes Fire in Los Angeles continues to rage, having burned over 10,000 acres and remaining just 14% contained, according to fire authorities in the city. The fire, which was first reported on Wednesday morning in the unincorporated community of Castaic in northwestern Los Angeles County, has spread rapidly due to aggressive winds.
With more than 4,000 fire personnel assigned to the Hughes Fire, authorities are working tirelessly to contain the blaze. Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone stated, “The weather is what is predominantly driving this fire and its spread right now. A red flag warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. Friday. It remains a difficult fire to contain, although we are getting the upper hand.”
The fire has forced approximately 50,000 people to evacuate and caused temporary road closures on Interstate 5. Cal Fire issued an urgent alert urging residents in several areas near the Hughes Fire to leave immediately, including the vicinity of Castaic Lake, Paradise Ranch, and the Ridge Route.
There have also been reports of a fire in the Sepulveda Pass near Sherman Oaks. Initially reported as one acre, the fire has now been held at approximately 40 acres with no structures damaged and no injuries reported.
Despite the challenges posed by the fires, Mayor Karen Bass urges all Angelenos to follow the guidance of public safety officials to stay safe. Air support and aggressive actions have been deployed to combat the fires, with firefighters working diligently to ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas.
The fires in Los Angeles are part of a deadly wildfire season in California, with firefighters battling destructive blazes across the state for weeks. It is essential for residents to stay informed and prepared for any evacuation orders or alerts issued by authorities.
