Largest LAPD union slams anti-Trump protest directives, says arrests ‘should be a no-brainer’ in altercations

Following a series of violent incidents during anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Police Protective League, the largest union representing LAPD officers, is calling for an investigation into the “communication break-down” that led to officers being injured by rioters. The union stated that the arrest of individuals attacking police officers should have been a priority for the incident commander, but that did not happen during the protests.
Thousands of protesters gathered in L.A. to demonstrate against President Trump’s mass deportation program, blocking the 101 Freeway and engaging in altercations with police. Despite the chaos, no arrests were made on Monday, with LAPD Chief of Police Jim McDonnell stating that no stand-down order was given. The incident commander on site, Lillian Carranza, said that once officers were attacked, it became an unlawful assembly, but did not clarify if she gave an order to refrain from making arrests.
The LAPD’s control objectives include prioritizing public and officer safety, establishing a crowd-friendly law enforcement posture, and taking action against law violators. However, the LAPPL board believes that the incident commander’s decision not to make arrests put officers in danger and is calling for an investigation to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Protesters carried signs and flags, expressing opposition to Trump’s immigration policies. Some demonstrators were seen spraying graffiti and vandalizing cars on the freeway. Meanwhile, ICE has arrested over 7,400 illegal immigrants nationwide in a crackdown supported by the Trump administration.
