Las Vegas hotel bedbug infestations spark multiple lawsuits over ‘injuries’

A street in Paris, France, has become a disturbing sight as it is filled with mattresses in plastic bags amid a bedbug outbreak that continues to plague the city. The scene was discovered by an 18-year-old student who was walking home from school when she stumbled upon the mattresses on the side of the street. This unsettling sight serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing issue of bedbug infestations in the city.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic in Las Vegas, bedbug infestations at two popular resorts have led to legal action after four travelers reported severe injuries. Three lawsuits were filed in April against Treasure Island and the Luxor Hotel for incidents that occurred in the summer of 2024. The complaints detail the harrowing experiences of guests who suffered from painful bites and other health issues as a result of the infestations.

Teresa Bruce, a guest at Treasure Island, noticed bites on her body during her stay and decided to switch rooms, only to be met with more bites. Similarly, Stephen and Courtney Gully experienced swelling and itching from bedbug bites at the Luxor Hotel, with Courtney suffering a severe reaction that required a hospital visit. Brianna McKenzie also stayed at the Luxor and described being “massacred by bedbugs” and enduring emotional distress from the ordeal.

Attorney Brian Virag, representing the plaintiffs in these cases, emphasized the need for hotels to prioritize guest safety by implementing proper pest control procedures and training housekeepers to recognize and eliminate bedbugs. He stressed the importance of early detection and response to bedbug infestations, as these pests reproduce rapidly and can cause significant harm to guests.

For individuals who may have been exposed to bedbugs, Virag advised documenting any bites or symptoms and being vigilant about checking for signs of infestation. He also expressed confidence that the hotels in question would respond to the complaints in a timely manner.

The presence of mattresses on the streets of Paris and the legal action taken by travelers in Las Vegas serve as stark reminders of the serious consequences of bedbug infestations. These incidents highlight the importance of proactive measures to prevent and address bedbug outbreaks, ensuring the safety and well-being of guests in hotels and residences alike.
