Lawmakers deliver party-line reactions to Trump phone call with Putin: ‘Art of the deal’

Republican lawmakers are praising President Donald Trump for his efforts to negotiate a peace deal in Ukraine after a nearly two-hour phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The call, which took place earlier this week, focused on the need for a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Rep. Scott Perry, R-Pa., commended President Trump for his willingness to engage in diplomacy and negotiate peace, particularly in contrast to former President Joe Biden, who Perry claimed refused to even pick up the phone to try. The House Foreign Affairs Committee also lauded Trump’s efforts, stating that he was able to get Putin to agree that a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine is necessary.

The discussion between Trump and Putin centered on the importance of ending the conflict and establishing a lasting peace. They agreed to work towards a ceasefire, starting with energy and infrastructure negotiations, as well as discussions on implementing a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea. The leaders also committed to beginning negotiations in the Middle East to further the peace process.

While Republican lawmakers praised Trump for his diplomatic efforts, Democrats expressed skepticism about whether Russia would uphold a peace deal. Rep. Jason Crow, D-Colo., questioned Putin’s reliability, stating that Putin has a history of not honoring agreements. Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., also voiced concerns about Russia’s role in obstructing peace in Europe.

National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes defended Trump’s approach, stating that progress towards a ceasefire agreement has been made under his leadership. Hughes emphasized the goal of stopping the violence and finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Following the call, Trump described it as “very good and productive” and mentioned the discussion of a “Contract for Peace.” He highlighted the desire of both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to end the violence and expressed hope for a successful resolution.

Overall, Trump’s efforts to negotiate a peace deal in Ukraine have drawn praise from Republican lawmakers, who contrasted his approach with that of Biden. While skepticism remains about Russia’s commitment to peace, there is optimism that progress can be made towards resolving the conflict.
