Republican lawmakers are calling on the Trump administration to investigate President Biden’s dismissal of a lawsuit claiming millions in fraud from a green energy project the day after the 2024 election. The project in question, the Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project, was funded by President Barack Obama’s Treasury Department in 2011 with hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars.
The lawsuit, filed by CMB Export, LLC, alleged fraud involving approximately $275 million of taxpayer funds and was being investigated by the Department of Justice (DOJ) until the Biden administration moved to dismiss the case on Nov. 6, 2024. This decision raised red flags for Republican Reps. Lance Gooden and Carol Miller, who penned a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi expressing concerns over the potential misuse of taxpayer funds.
The lawmakers questioned the Biden administration’s rationale for dismissing the lawsuit, suggesting that the timing of the decision – just after the presidential election – may have been politically influenced. They also raised doubts about the DOJ’s claims that the dismissal was in the public interest and that pursuing the case would impose an undue burden on the government.
Gooden and Miller emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in cases involving taxpayer dollars, especially when allegations of fraud are involved. They called for an internal investigation by the DOJ and urged a reevaluation of the case to allow CMB Export, LLC to continue pursuing legal action against the solar company.
The Republican lawmakers stressed that the American people deserve to know how their tax dollars are being used and to ensure that fraud allegations on such a significant scale are thoroughly investigated and prosecuted. They expressed confidence that with President Trump back in the White House, transparency would be the standard for the federal government moving forward.
In conclusion, the letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi highlighted the importance of upholding accountability and protecting public funds, particularly in cases like the Crescent Dunes project where taxpayer dollars have been at stake. The lawmakers called for a thorough review of the case and a commitment to ensuring that justice is served in cases of alleged fraud against the government.
