Lawmakers slam Crockett for worrying more about other countries than her own
Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, is once again making headlines for her controversial comments, this time drawing criticism for expressing sympathy for countries potentially affected by mass deportations from the U.S. However, her silence on the issue of millions of migrants pouring into the U.S. under the Biden administration has not gone unnoticed.
In a video posted on her Instagram page, which boasts 1.3 million followers, Crockett condemned the actions of Republicans who had voted down an amendment to a budget bill that aimed to clarify that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) cannot detain or deport U.S. citizens under any circumstances. She highlighted a recent case where a U.S. citizen child was deported along with her noncitizen mother, sparking outrage among Democrats.
Crockett, alongside Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., and Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., criticized Republicans for giving President Donald Trump the legal ability to deport U.S. citizens. The video clip was met with backlash from conservative accounts, commentators, and Republican lawmakers who accused Crockett of hypocrisy.
The Texas Democrat’s comments come amidst a push by Republicans in Congress to allocate billions of dollars towards Trump’s mass deportation and border security plan, which includes funding for thousands of new officers, increased fees for migrants seeking asylum, and a substantial investment in a border wall. The goal is to remove 1 million immigrants annually and house 100,000 individuals in detention centers.
Crockett’s controversial remarks are not new, as she previously sparked outrage by referring to Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, who uses a wheelchair, as “Governor Hot Wheels.” Despite claiming her words were misunderstood, the incident adds to her reputation for making incendiary comments aimed at political opponents.
