Lead detective in investigation that led to sex assault charges testifying at ex-world juniors trial

Detective Emphasizes Importance of Avoiding Retraumatization in E.M. Case

In a recent court hearing, Detective Ryan discussed her approach to the E.M. case, emphasizing the care taken to avoid retraumatizing the victim. Ryan explained that after an initial interview with E.M. on July 22, 2022, she decided against a follow-up interview, citing the availability of video footage from 2018 police interviews and a statement from Hockey Canada as sufficient evidence.

Ryan stated that subjecting E.M. to another interview would have been retraumatizing and unnecessary, as all relevant information had already been obtained. Additionally, Ryan did not interview E.M.’s co-workers who were present at Jack’s bar on the night in question in June 2018, as E.M. had indicated that they did not have valuable information to contribute, having not been present during the majority of the evening.

The detective also noted that E.M. did not disclose her communication with a co-worker via text while at the bar, which Ryan deemed irrelevant to the investigation. When questioned about E.M.’s sobriety level or attempts to “escape” McLeod at the bar, Ryan explained that she did not place much significance on text messages in determining these factors.

Following the completion of his questioning, Sayani concluded his inquiry, with lawyers representing Dillon Dubé and Cal Foote expressing that they had no further questions for Ryan. This development marks a significant point in the ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the E.M. case.

As the case continues to unfold, it is evident that Detective Ryan’s meticulous approach to gathering evidence and protecting the well-being of the victim is paramount. By prioritizing sensitivity and avoiding retraumatization, Ryan’s investigation sets a standard for ethical and thorough investigative practices.
