PUNNICHY, Sask. – RCMP say they have arrested a man accused of driving a truck they claim left the scene after fatally beating a toddler.

Mounties have said the victim was a one-year-old boy from George Gordon First Nation, 70 miles north of Regina.

They said the child was pronounced dead at the scene on Thursday night.

Mounties later issued a press release saying they were looking for 33-year-old Mervin Poorman of Kawacatoose First Nation, and that he had been charged with failing to stop following an accident resulting in death and operating a vehicle while this was forbidden.

Police sent out an update that Poorman had been located and arrested Friday night at a home in Cold Lake, Alta.

They thanked the public for providing information that aided the investigation.
