New legislation has been introduced to penalize college campuses that allow protest encampments, which were prevalent last year during the Israel-Hamas conflict. The “No Tax Dollars for Colleges Encampments Act,” sponsored by Sen. Jim Banks, R-Ind., aims to cut federal funding to schools that do not have clear policies on handling civil disturbances, amending the Higher Education Act of 1965.
Sen. Banks expressed concern over academic institutions becoming breeding grounds for antisemitism and pro-terror ideologies, stating that his bill holds universities accountable and prevents taxpayer dollars from supporting institutions that promote anti-American sentiments.
This legislation is part of a broader crackdown on campuses that failed to address protests targeting Jewish students or creating a hostile environment for them. The Trump administration had previously revoked $400 million in federal funding for Columbia University, known for its Gaza-supportive encampment. One of the key figures in these protests, Mahmoud Khalil, was recently arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for being in the country under a student visa.
President Trump announced Khalil’s arrest on Truth Social, emphasizing that it was just the beginning. He vowed to apprehend and deport individuals engaged in pro-terrorist and anti-American activities on college campuses.
Furthermore, the Department of Education is investigating 60 universities for possible Title VI violations related to antisemitism. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon expressed disappointment over the ongoing safety concerns faced by Jewish students and urged university leaders to adhere to antidiscrimination laws.
In conclusion, the proposed legislation and ongoing investigations highlight the government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and safety of all students on college campuses. Stay informed by joining Fox News for exclusive access to this developing story and other premium content.
