A letter from a lawyer representing New York Attorney General Letitia James to Department of Justice official Ed Martin has sparked controversy this week. The letter criticized Martin for visiting James’ home and suggesting she resign from her position.

In the letter obtained by Fox News, Abbe Lowell, a prominent white-collar lawyer, condemned Martin’s visit to the attorney general’s residence in Brooklyn as a “truly bizarre, made-for-media stunt.” Lowell went on to accuse Martin of orchestrating a photo opportunity with the intent to prejudice James during an ongoing investigation.

Martin’s visit to James’ house was reported by the New York Post and later shared on social media. This move has raised questions about the ethics and boundaries of the Department of Justice.

Lowell’s letter comes in the midst of two grand jury investigations initiated by the DOJ into James, one related to her civil fraud lawsuit against President Donald Trump and another concerning mortgage fraud allegations in Virginia.

Martin, who is leading a task force on “weaponization” and serving as Pardon Attorney, has been given special prosecutorial privileges to conduct the mortgage fraud probe into James. Both James and Rep. Adam Schiff have denied any wrongdoing and criticized the investigations as politically motivated.

Lowell’s letter to Martin emphasized that the DOJ should not use investigations for political purposes and called out Martin for calling on James to resign amid the ongoing federal probe.

Martin’s request for James to step down was deemed a violation of codes of conduct and court precedents by Lowell. The back-and-forth between the two parties has raised concerns about the politicization of the DOJ’s investigative powers.

Both a DOJ spokesperson and a representative for Lowell declined to comment on the matter when approached for a response.
