Leylah Fernandez outlasts Dutch athlete Suzan Lamens in 1st round at Nottingham Open

Canada’s Leylah Fernandez Advances to Second Round of Lexus Nottingham Open
On Monday in England, Canada’s Leylah Fernandez secured a hard-fought victory over Suzan Lamens of the Netherlands to advance to the second round of the Lexus Nottingham Open grass-court tennis tournament. The fifth seed from Laval, Que., displayed her prowess on the court, ultimately triumphing with a scoreline of 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
One of the key factors in Fernandez’s victory was her strong serve. She managed to outace Lamens 3-2 and committed just two double faults, a significant improvement over her opponent’s tally of seven. Despite her solid serving performance, both players struggled to hold serve throughout the match. Fernandez was broken five times out of 10 opportunities, while Lamens faced six breaks on 13 chances.
After enduring a four-match losing streak, the 22-year-old Canadian was able to turn the tide and notch her first grass-court victory since last year’s Wimbledon. With this win, Fernandez boosts her season record to 13-14 and sets her sights on further success in the tournament.
Next up for Fernandez is a showdown against the winner of the match between Ukrainian qualifier Yuliia Starodubtseva and Spanish lucky loser Cristina Bucsa at the WTA 250 event. As she prepares for her upcoming match, Fernandez will look to build on her recent success and continue her quest for glory on the grass courts.
