Leylah Fernandez speeds to 54 minutes, first round victory in Germany

Canada’s Leylah Fernandez recorded a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Germany’s Lena Papadakis in the first round of the Bad Homburg Open in Germany on Monday.

Fernandez, from Laval, Que., took just 54 minutes to clinch victory on the WTA Tour 250-level event.

She plays Anna Blinkova in the second round. The ninth-seeded Russian recorded a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory over Germany’s Sabine Lisicki.

Diallo wins, Pospisil loses at Wimbledon

Canada’s Gabriel Diallo defeated Turkey’s Cem Ilkel 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 in the first round of qualifying at Wimbledon in London.

Diallo, the world number 140 from Montreal, will face Matteo Gigante in the next round. The 254th seeded Italian defeated Britain’s Harry Wendelken 6-3, 7-6 (6) to advance.

The 1.80 meter tall Diallo was placed 29th in the qualifying draw. It takes three wins to secure a spot in the main draw of the Grand Slam event.

Vasek Pospisil, a native of Vernon, BC, dropped a 6-2, 7-6 (2) decision against Brazilian Felipe Meligeni Alves.

Three Canadians enter the women’s qualifying draw.

Carol Zhao of Richmond Hill, Ont., would open against Britain’s Emily Appleton. Toronto’s Katherine Sebov would meet Nuria Brancaccio of Italy and Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que., would play Greet Minnen of Belgium.
