Liberals open leadership race to replace Andrew Furey on May 3
The Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador (LPNL) has officially kicked off their leadership race to find the province’s next premier. With Premier Andrew Furey stepping down from his position after four and a half years, the LPNL is now in the process of selecting a new leader.
The nomination period for candidates will close on March 24, with a leadership convention scheduled to take place in St. John’s from May 2-3 to announce the party’s new leader. The leadership election committee, comprised of Judy Morrow, Ashley Power-Stack, John Allan, Anna Wadden, and Michael King, will oversee the entire process.
In a statement released by the party, chair Judy Morrow expressed excitement for the upcoming race, highlighting the importance of engaging with registered Liberals and the general public during this pivotal time in the province’s history. The LPNL is committed to a grassroots-driven process for selecting the next leader, ensuring transparency and inclusivity throughout the election.
To participate in the leadership convention, individuals must have been registered Liberals between January 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025, and must meet all other criteria outlined in the party’s rules. This ensures that only eligible members have a say in choosing the next premier of Newfoundland and Labrador.
As the race heats up, it will be crucial for candidates to connect with voters, outline their platforms, and demonstrate their leadership qualities. The LPNL is dedicated to a fair and democratic process, giving every registered Liberal the opportunity to have a voice in shaping the future of the province.
