Link between vision and learning at heart of program offering free glasses to N.S. kids

The Eye See, Eye Learn program in Nova Scotia has been making a significant impact on the lives of young students by providing free eyeglasses to those in need. Since its launch in February, over 20 children have received glasses through this initiative, which is open to pre-primary and primary students with a valid Nova Scotia health card.
One parent, Shawn Creelman, shared his experience with the program after discovering that his five-year-old son needed glasses during a routine eye exam. Creelman expressed gratitude for the program, stating that it provides a valuable resource for families who may not have access to private insurance for eyewear.
The program, which is offered through the provincial association of optometrists, partners with eyewear distributor Modern Optical for frames and the Essilor Foundation for lenses. Additionally, eye exams for children nine and younger are covered under MSI, making it easier for families to ensure their children’s vision health.
Dr. Lisa Morrison, president of the Nova Scotia Association of Optometrists, highlighted the importance of early eye exams for children, emphasizing the link between vision and learning. She noted that one in four school-aged children have vision problems, and regular eye exams are crucial for optimal vision and development.
The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends annual eye exams for children to monitor their vision health. Most optometrists in Nova Scotia participate in the Eye See, Eye Learn program, making it accessible to families across the province. A list of participating optometrists can be found on the program’s website.
Overall, the Eye See, Eye Learn program is playing a vital role in ensuring that vision problems do not hinder the educational success of Nova Scotia’s youngest students. By providing free eyeglasses and promoting regular eye exams, this initiative is making a positive impact on children’s lives and empowering them to thrive in school.
