Lives of U Sports women’s hockey players intertwined from Quebec to Italy

After years of being rivals on the ice, Gabrielle Santerre and Emilie Lussier finally found themselves on the same team earlier in January. The Quebec natives, who had faced off against each other in the Quebec junior hockey system and then again in university, were now playing together as part of Team Canada at the World University Games in Torino, Italy.

The tournament was a quintessentially Canadian hockey experience, with Canada entering as favorites and winning several blowout games before losing in the gold-medal game to the Czech Republic in overtime. Despite the heartbreaking loss, Santerre and Lussier took away valuable lessons to apply to their respective teams in the U Sports season.

Upon returning home, the two players faced each other on the ice once again, with Concordia emerging victorious in both games against Bishop’s. Despite the competition, Santerre and Lussier cherished the opportunity to play together and build a strong friendship during their time with Team Canada.

Santerre, a standout player for Bishop’s, draws inspiration from the underdog Czech team and the unpredictable nature of sports. Despite her individual success, she is focused on helping her team improve and make a push for the playoffs.

On the other hand, Lussier plays a key role for Concordia, a powerhouse in U Sports women’s hockey. With experienced coaches and a talented roster, Lussier is no stranger to the pressure of defending a championship and maintaining a perfect record in the league.

As the RSEQ playoffs approach, both players are determined to lead their teams to success. Santerre hopes to overcome the challenges of being a targeted player this season, while Lussier aims to repeat as champions with Concordia.

Looking ahead, both players aspire to play in the PWHL and potentially pursue a professional career in hockey. The prospect of representing Canada at the 2030 Olympics is a dream for both Santerre and Lussier, but their immediate focus is on the 2027 World University Games and seeking redemption for their silver medal finish in Italy.

As they continue to work hard and improve their game, Santerre and Lussier are determined to achieve their goals and make a mark in the world of women’s hockey. Their journey from rivals to teammates has only strengthened their bond and fueled their passion for the sport.
