Local couple makes ‘transformative’ donation to Cape Breton Regional Hospital

The Cape Breton Regional Hospital’s neonatal unit has received a significant donation from local couple Gordon and Joan Sutherland. The donation, described as “transformative” by the hospital’s fundraisers, will be spread out over a 10-year period and has already begun to make a positive impact on the NICU.

The couple’s generous gift has allowed the NICU to replace aging equipment that was causing challenges for the staff. Clinical nurse lead, Haley Gouthro, highlighted the need for new infant incubators and brain monitors that monitor brain function and seizure activity in babies. The new equipment will make it easier for staff to interpret data and provide timely treatment to infants in need.

In addition to the equipment upgrades, the donation will also fund improvements to rooms that accommodate up to 14 parents near their children in the NICU. This will provide comfort and support to families during a difficult time.

With the Sutherlands’ donation freeing up resources, the hospital foundation can now focus on supporting other areas within the hospital. CEO Paula MacNeil expressed her gratitude towards the couple for their generosity and humility in giving back to the community. She emphasized that the donation will have a lasting impact on the lives of future generations.

The NICU at Cape Breton Regional Hospital cares for an average of 300 infants every year, and the Sutherlands’ contribution will help create a brighter future for children yet to come into the world. Their selfless act of kindness will leave a lasting legacy of support and care for families in need.

Overall, the Sutherlands’ donation has not only enhanced the capabilities of the neonatal unit but has also paved the way for continued support and improvements in healthcare services at the hospital. Their generosity serves as an inspiration for others to give back to their communities and make a difference in the lives of those in need.
