London father-daughter win big award with horse at Western Fair Raceway

A Champion’s Journey: Ladies from Hell

Every morning, Shae Sumner can be found in the barn, tending to the first horse she’s ever owned. Standing proudly next to her is ‘Ladies from Hell’, a 10-year-old mare that she co-owns with her father, Michael.

“She recently clinched the prestigious ‘Aged Mare of the Year’ award at Western Fair, our home track,” Shae shared, beaming with pride.

In 2024, Ladies from Hell had a remarkable season, securing 11 victories and earning over $60,000 in prize money. The mare’s success was a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Sumner family.

“Winning an ‘Aged Mare of the Year’ award is no easy feat,” remarked Michael, a seasoned trainer and horseman from London, Ontario. “With tough competition coming in from various tracks, it’s a significant achievement.”

With 46 career wins to her name, Ladies from Hell’s journey was one of redemption. Initially struggling in higher classes, the Sumners saw potential in her and set out to rehabilitate the mare.

“We acquired her for $8,500 with modest expectations, but she exceeded them by far,” Michael explained. “She has consistently performed well, earning over $130,000 on smaller tracks.”

Despite facing health challenges that sidelined her for a year, Ladies from Hell made a remarkable comeback in 2024. After a slow start, she defied expectations and emerged victorious, showcasing her resilience and racing prowess.

As Ladies from Hell gears up for another racing season, the Sumners are optimistic about her prospects. “She will be competing on Wednesday at Western Fair District, marking her debut as an 11-year-old,” Shae revealed.

“While she may retire in the future to become a broodmare, we hope she can enjoy another successful year before that,” Shae added. “For now, we look forward to more victories and memorable moments with our beloved champion.”

Before the final chapter unfolds, Ladies from Hell is poised to grace the winner’s circle once again, embodying the spirit of perseverance and triumph.
