Longest ballot protest targets Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s riding

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is gearing up for a tough battle in his eighth federal campaign, as he faces an unprecedented number of opponents in his riding of Carleton. A staggering 80 candidates have thrown their hats into the ring, most of whom are affiliated with the Longest Ballot Committee, a group advocating for electoral reform.

The Longest Ballot Committee believes that the current electoral system is flawed and that political parties are not doing enough to ensure fair representation in government. They are pushing for a citizens’ assembly to oversee electoral reform, arguing that politicians cannot be trusted to make impartial decisions on the matter.

Tomas Szuchewycz, an organizer with the committee, emphasized the need for an independent body to handle election laws, free from political influence. The group had initially planned to field candidates in Liberal Leader Mark Carney’s riding as well, but logistical challenges prevented them from doing so.

This is not the first time the Longest Ballot Committee has staged such protests. In recent byelections, they flooded the ballots with a record number of candidates, causing delays in the vote count. Elections Canada has expressed concerns about the impact of these protests on the electoral process, particularly for voters with disabilities.

Despite criticism, Szuchewycz remains steadfast in his group’s mission to challenge the status quo. They are aiming to register a total of 93 candidates in Carleton, setting a new record. Chief Electoral Officer Stéphane Perrault has proposed changes to nomination rules to address these protests, but the Longest Ballot Committee remains undeterred.
