Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass scrutinized as California wildfires rage

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass faced harsh criticism and tough questions from reporters upon her return from a trip to Ghana, where she had been when wildfires broke out across her jurisdiction. As reporters pressed her on her absence and the budget cuts to the Fire Department, Bass remained expressionless and refused to answer.

Sky News reporter David Blevins questioned Bass about whether she owed citizens an apology for being absent while their homes burned and if she regretted cutting the Fire Department budget by millions of dollars. Despite the pressing questions, Bass continued to ignore them, looking at the ground and refusing to acknowledge the reporter.

During a news conference later that day, Bass said she took the fastest route back from Ghana, using a military plane for speedy arrival. She assured the public that she was fighting for them and had been in constant communication during her flight back.

However, Bass’s leadership has been called into question, with many blaming her for the disaster due to the significant budget cuts she made to the Fire Department in favor of spending on the city’s homeless population. The budget for the Fire Department was reduced by over $17 million from the previous year, while the homeless budget remained significantly larger.

The wildfires in Los Angeles County have forced hundreds of thousands of residents to evacuate, with five people reported dead in the Eaton Fire as of Wednesday afternoon. Bass’s handling of the situation has come under intense scrutiny, with many calling for accountability and action.
