Los Angeles, other sanctuary cities could see funding slashed in new House bill

A new House GOP bill is making waves, proposing that sanctuary cities like Los Angeles could lose their federal funds if they fail to comply with federal immigration authorities. Rep. Nick Langworthy, R-N.Y., spoke exclusively to Fox News Digital about the Stop Dangerous Sanctuary Cities Act, which aims to hold these cities accountable for ignoring federal law.

Langworthy emphasized the importance of cracking down on sanctuary cities, stating that too many lives have been lost due to individuals in the country illegally. The bill, which has a Senate companion introduced by Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, would allow the executive branch to withhold federal funds from jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

One key provision of the bill would empower state and local officers to collaborate with federal authorities, even in jurisdictions where local laws prohibit such cooperation. Langworthy highlighted the challenges faced by law enforcement officers in his district in Buffalo, New York, due to the state’s Green Light Law, which prohibits sharing DMV records with federal authorities.

The push to defund sanctuary cities comes in the wake of violent clashes in Los Angeles, where rioters clashed with federal authorities over ICE raids. The bill aims to address the lack of support from progressive leaders in these cities for federal law enforcement efforts.

Langworthy expressed hope that the violence seen in Los Angeles would not spread to other cities, emphasizing the need to maintain law and order. He commended President Trump for taking a strong stance against unrest and urged for unity in upholding civil society.
