Macron warns us and China that dividing the world risks tearing down global order

French President Emmanuel Macron delivered a serious and thought-provoking address at the Shangri-La security forum in Singapore, where he touched on some of the most pressing global crises. In his speech, Macron made it clear that France is a friend and ally of the United States, but also emphasized the importance of cooperation with China, despite occasional disagreements and competition.

However, Macron issued a warning to both the United States and China, highlighting the dangers of forcing nations to choose sides in the midst of escalating tensions. He stressed that such a move could potentially destabilize the global order that has been maintained since the end of World War II.

“We will destroy methodically, all the institutions we created after the Second World War in order to preserve peace and to have cooperation on health, on climate, on human rights and so on,” Macron cautioned.

The French president also criticized China for supporting Russia in its illegal invasion of Ukraine and for failing to prevent North Korea from sending troops to fight in the conflict. He underscored the interconnectedness of various conflicts around the world, warning that the disregard for universal principles could have far-reaching consequences.

Macron called on China to prevent North Korea from engaging in European conflicts if it wishes to avoid NATO involvement in Asia. He raised concerns about the potential implications for Taiwan and the Philippines if global reactions to conflicts such as the war in Ukraine are not consistent and decisive.

In addressing the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Macron condemned giving Israel a “free pass” for its military operations that have contributed to a humanitarian crisis. He argued that overlooking such actions could damage global credibility and undermine efforts to preserve territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Overall, Macron’s speech underscored the importance of maintaining a balanced approach to international relations and avoiding actions that could jeopardize the stability of the global order. His call for cooperation, accountability, and adherence to universal principles serves as a timely reminder of the need for unity and collaboration in addressing complex global challenges.
