US Election 2024

MAGA candidate wins GOP primary in Florida race to replace Matt Gaetz in Congress

The special congressional election in Florida’s 1st Congressional District to replace former GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz has concluded with Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis winning the Republican primary. Patronis, who was endorsed by President Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson, emerged as the clear favorite in the crowded primary field and is now set to face Democratic candidate Gay Valimont in the general election on April 1.

President Trump praised Patronis in a social media post, highlighting his deep ties to Florida’s Panhandle region and his successful track record as a fourth-generation Floridian and owner of a popular seafood restaurant. Despite criticism for not living in the district, Patronis’ statewide electoral victories as chief financial officer have positioned him as a strong contender for the congressional seat.

The primary results mark a significant shift in the district following Gaetz’s abrupt resignation from Congress last year. Gaetz, who was tapped by Trump for the position of attorney general, faced allegations of illicit drug use and sexual misconduct, leading to his withdrawal from consideration. The Ethics Committee had been investigating these allegations prior to Gaetz’s resignation.

In a separate special election in Florida’s 6th Congressional District, primaries were also held to fill the seat vacated by GOP Rep. Michael Waltz, who stepped down to serve as national security adviser in the Trump administration. The general election in this district is also scheduled for April 1, with Republican and Democratic candidates vying for the seat.

The outcome of these special elections will have significant implications for the balance of power in the House, as Republicans aim to bolster their majority and advance President Trump’s agenda. With a fragile majority in the chamber, the addition of new Republican representatives from Florida’s 1st and 6th Congressional Districts could provide much-needed support for the party’s legislative priorities.
