Main break in downtown Halifax causes water loss, flooded road, traffic back up

A water main break in downtown Halifax is causing water issues and traffic jams on Friday afternoon.

Halifax Water officials say the “unplanned water main break” was caused by a third party. Residents and businesses in the area are encountering dry taps or low water pressure. Some people might find discoloured water during or after the repair. Halifax Water officials recommend running the faucet on cold until it clears.

The break flooded Upper and Lower Water Streets, backing up the already busy thoroughfare.

It is believed the break occurred in the Cogswell area where work is being done to remove the overpass infrastructure. Halifax Water said repair work is being done within “an existing work area.”

A statement from Halifax Water on Friday afternoon said crews have isolated the break and customers in Downtown Halifax should see water pressure and service return to normal shortly.

The Halifax Water customer care line is 902-420-9287.
