Majority say Biden will be remembered poorly as president says farewell to the nation: poll
More than half of Americans believe that President Biden will be remembered as a below-average or one of the worst presidents in the history of the United States, according to a recent national poll conducted by Marist. The poll revealed that just over a third of adults surveyed think Biden will go down in history as one of the worst presidents, while 19% believe he will be considered below average.
On the other hand, 28% of participants in the poll stated that Biden’s legacy will be seen as average, with 19% believing he will be regarded as an above-average or one of the best presidents in American history. These findings come just days before Biden’s term ends and President-elect Trump takes over the White House.
As Biden prepares to deliver his farewell address to the nation, he aims to solidify his legacy as a president who stabilized domestic politics, enhanced America’s leadership globally, and successfully navigated the nation through the COVID-19 pandemic while making significant investments in infrastructure and clean energy.
In a letter released to Americans, Biden highlighted the progress made during his tenure, citing a record 16.6 million new jobs created, a strong economy, decreasing inflation, and a reduction in the racial wealth gap. However, despite these achievements, the Marist poll indicates that Biden’s presidency may not be viewed favorably by history.
Another recent survey by USA Today/Suffolk University showed that 44% of voters nationwide believe Biden will be considered a failed president, with only 21% viewing him as a good president and 5% as a great president. Similarly, opinions about President Trump remain divisive, with 44% of Americans holding a favorable view of him and 49% unfavorable.
As Trump prepares to take office once again, the Marist poll suggests that Americans have high expectations for his economic policies. However, there is also disapproval of his proposed mass deportations of undocumented immigrants and his pledge to pardon supporters convicted in the January 6, 2021 riot at the Capitol.
Overall, the survey indicates a split in public opinion regarding the legacies of both Biden and Trump. While Biden’s approval rating stands at 42% in the Marist poll, with 50% disapproving, Trump’s favorability remains relatively low at 44%. These findings suggest that both presidents may face challenges in how they are ultimately remembered by history.
