Self-described Democratic-Socialist New York City mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani made headlines on Saturday with the announcement of a city-wide scavenger hunt. The campaign video, posted on Mamdani’s social media account, seems to take a playful jab at his opponent, Mayor Eric Adams, amidst recent scandals surrounding Adams’ inner circle.
The video features Mamdani sitting on a bench, munching on a bag of Herr’s Sour Cream & Onion ripple chips, while inviting viewers to join in the scavenger hunt. This creative campaign tactic comes on the heels of allegations against Winnie Greco, a former aide to Adams, who was accused of trying to hand a reporter a wad of cash hidden inside a bag of the same brand of potato chips.
Starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Mamdani’s scavenger hunt will take participants on a journey through the city, solving clues related to New York’s history. Each clue will lead to the next location, culminating in a special surprise at the final stop. Mamdani humorously assures participants that the surprise will not be a wad of cash, taking another dig at his rival.
Amidst the playful tone of the scavenger hunt, Mamdani’s campaign spokesperson emphasized the importance of focusing on the needs of New Yorkers. “While New Yorkers struggle to afford the most expensive city in America, Adams’ administration is too busy tripping over corruption charges to come to their defense,” the spokesperson stated.
Just a day after the potato chip incident involving Greco, several individuals from Adams’ inner circle, including a former top advisor, were indicted in an alleged bribery scandal. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office announced the indictments, alleging a pay-to-play scheme and other charges against Adams associates.
