Man airlifted from Japan’s Mount Fuji rescued again after he returned to search for his phone

A climber who was airlifted due to altitude sickness near the peak of Japan’s iconic Mount Fuji last week found himself in need of rescue again just four days later. The climber, a 27-year-old Chinese student living in Japan, initially called for help on April 22 after experiencing symptoms of altitude sickness and damaging his climbing irons. He was successfully airlifted from the mountain at that time.
However, on Saturday, the climber decided to return to the Fujinomiya trail on Mount Fuji, located approximately 10,000 feet above sea level, in search of his cell phone and other belongings that he had left behind during his initial rescue. Unfortunately, he once again displayed symptoms of altitude sickness and was unable to move, prompting another climber to come to his aid.
Authorities have warned of the harsh conditions present on Japan’s tallest peak, especially during the off-season when temperatures are low and snow covers the mountain, even in spring. While the official hiking season on Mount Fuji runs from July to early September, there are no penalties for hiking during other times of the year. However, the recent incident involving the Chinese student has sparked online calls for penalties for individuals who require multiple rescues.
In 2023, over 220,000 people climbed Mount Fuji between July and September, highlighting the popularity of the iconic mountain among hikers. Recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 2013, Mount Fuji has a rich history as a place of pilgrimage and continues to attract visitors from around the world.
To address issues of overcrowding and safety risks associated with rushed overnight climbs to catch the sunrise, local authorities have implemented measures such as entry fees and limits on the number of visitors allowed on certain trails. These regulations aim to ensure a safer and more sustainable hiking experience for all adventurers on Mount Fuji.
As climbers continue to flock to this majestic peak, it is essential for individuals to exercise caution, respect the mountain’s natural environment, and prioritize safety during their expeditions. The allure of Mount Fuji is undeniable, but it is crucial to approach this challenging terrain with preparedness and mindfulness to ensure a successful and safe climbing experience.
